Servicing your Garage Doors for Winter
Garage Door services you should not ignore
With the winter season just around the corner for the lower mainland, there is no better time than now to service your garage door and eliminate possible downtime and issues during the cold winter months. And let’s face it, no one wants to be fixing their garage in the snow! With this in mind, here are some garage door service points you should never ignore.
Inspect or replace garage door rollers
Your garage rollers need to be inspected twice a year regardless if they are made of steel or nylon, and they should always be replaced every seven years. Roller replacement may be sooner if you use your garage door many times a day so worn, chipped or cracked rollers should be replaced as soon as possible.
Check the hardware
With garage doors moving up and down 2 or more times a day and often more than a thousand times per year, it is only expected that the hardware will need to be reviewed. Movement and vibration can loosen the hardware making this main point of entry a potential hazard and risk for your loved ones. If your hardware is loose or damaged this winter, contact Doorcare to coordinate service.
Clean the tracks of debris
During the warmer months and into fall, the tracks can be filled with elements like leaves and dust. This also is a great time to look at alignment and determine if major adjustments to tracks must be done. With the weather metal parts contract and expand with the warm to cold fluctuations which can make the alignment of your tracks a concern. Aligning your garage door tracks should always be done by a professional garage door technician.
Weatherstripping
In the colder months, weatherstrip can freeze and can easily crack and rip. If your garage door is not sealed correctly, not only do you welcome in the cold air, but you also welcome in the critters who often look for heat within your vehicle’s engine space.
Lubricate garage door tracks
Freezing temperatures can often cause standard garage door lubricants to harden and in many cases the tracks to rust. Lubricating all the moving parts including the rollers, hinges, rollers, springs and bearings will keep your garage door gliding smoothing.
